Existing Customer | Where will my account with the former Bank Pembangunan & Infrastruktur and/or Bank Industri be located after the merger of the two banks? | | | After the merger, your account will be assigned to either Bank Pembangunan or the SME Bank. After the rationalization exercise, Bank Pembangunan and the SME Bank will have specialised roles and functions with different target customer segments. Bank Pembangunan will support the financing of the capital-intensive infrastructure, maritime, high technology sectors, while the SME Bank will focus on the financing of small and medium enterprises. We will inform all existing customers once the transfer has been legally affected. | | | | | Who should I contact if I have questions on my existing account or loan applications? | | | After October 3rd, you can contact our new Customer Service Centre at 1-300-88-3131 where our customer service officers will be able to direct you to the appropriate loan officer to assist with your questions whether you are a former Bank Pembangunan or a former Bank Industri customer. | New Customer | How will the SME Bank be able to support the development of Malaysian SMEs? | | | As a one-stop financial services centre, the Bank will be better focused as there will be a clearer understanding of SME business and market needs and the ability to therefore shape the type and quality of products and support services to be developed and offered. | | | | | How will loan applications be reviewed? What is the credit evaluation criteria? | | | The SME Bank’s differentiated approach in credit evaluation places emphasis not only on the availability of collateral as the main criteria. Instead, we will examine the viability of our potential customer’s business proposal based on his/her character, capacity and commitment to pay as important considerations. At the same time, as a financial institution, we will observe banking practices and standards. | | | | | How are SME loan applications classified under the new bank? | | | A common definition on the classification of SMEs has been determined by the National SME Development Council with the Secretariat at Bank Negara Malaysia. To ensure that SME performances can be monitored nationwide, eligibility for SME funding and/or business development programmes would depend on the “tiering” of the SME business. | | | | | Will annual/projected turnover and the number of full-time employees continue to be the main criteria that segments the micro from the small and medium businesses? | | | Yes, the SME Bank complies with the recommendations of the National SME Development Council. Until the criteria changes for whatever reason, we will continue to classify our SMEs as mandated. However, entry can be at any one of the 3 “tiers”. | | | | | Does that mean that the smaller your business, the better the lending rate since the SME Bank is a development financial institution? | | | The lending rate offered would depend on the fund provider. However, we are working with other Government ministries and agencies to see how we can offer the micro businesses (those with an annual turnover of less than RM200,000) with better lending rates. But more important, we need to use the first one or two months of our operation to identify the key services which micro businesses would need. | | | | | Why is there a focus on business advisory services at the SME Bank? | | | We believe that through the support of a comprehensive, end-to-end advisory system to support the business development and knowledge needs of our SME customers, it will be an effective risk management strategy for both the SME customers and SME Bank where joint monitoring will address business problems before they occur. This will ensure the sustainable growth of the SME business and therefore the timely collection of loan repayments by the Bank. | | | | | Will the Bank focus on servicing existing customers? | | | With our current expertise, we will continue to serve our existing customers. However, with added resource and partnerships, we will certainly be in a better position to serve the needs of our new customers efficiently and speedily. | Others | Will the bank consider applications from all Malaysians? | | | The purpose of the SME Bank is to support the growth of all Malaysian SMEs. The Bank will adopt fair and transparent practices in its loan eligibility assessments. It is anticipated that that the Bank will enforce a credit rating system to delineate different customer segments from start-ups to high growth companies. However, in line with the national agenda, focus on the development of Bumiputera SMEs will continue to be a strategic objective. | | | | | Will the SME Bank work with other financial and non-financial institutions? | | | In meeting the needs of it customers, the SME Bank will require a full spectrum of products and services which it will not be able to deliver on its own. We are therefore collaborating with financial and non-financial Government and non-Government agencies and associations to ensure that the collaborative and concerted effort on the part of all stakeholders interested in the national development of SMEs will actively be promoted. | | | | | Will the bank focus on certain industries or will it entertain applications across sectors? | | | We will respond to the development needs of all SMEs from all sectors. Currently, most of our customers are involved in manufacturing, logistics, construction, real estate and the hospitality and tourism businesses. However, in line with Government policies, the future focus would be on the development of service providers, the priority strategic industries such as ICT, Agro-based manufacturing and programmes for regional development. High-technology, maritime and infrastructure industries will be handled by the holding company, Bank Pembangunan, as they were mandated to support the development of certain strategic sectors. As part of our contribution towards building an entrepreneurial society, we have also developed entrepreneurial programmes for young graduates. | | | | | Will there be enough funds to respond to all SME needs? | | | Special funds have been the mainstay of development financial institutions where financing is targeted to certain activities and sectors within the parameters of specific programmes. However, it is the objective of the holding company, Bank Pembangunan, to identify alternative sources of funds (in addition to Government funding) from capital markets which when achieved would finance an expanded number of industries and activities for SMEs. | | | | Back to top
